The neighbors hadn’t seen him for a couple days or more
No one answered when I knocked so I opened up the door
The heat was off, the house was cold, mail piled on the floor
You’d think I’d have guessed it right away
It’s been darker lately, he told me on the phone
I wasn’t sure what he meant but there was something in his tone
I just can’t imagine spending that much time alone
It seemed like he was getting through the day
Chorus:
Could it be he told me he had plans to be away
Maybe see his daughter who moved down to LA
Or head up to that cabin where he always liked to stay
When the Cutthroat chase the Kokanee upstream
Walking through the house, not sure what I’d find
Everything I wish I’d done, racing through my mind
Down a bedroom hallway to a single written line
This is no way to live
Time keeps moving forward for all of us still here
I think about you sometimes when that song comes to my ear
I wonder who you’d be now if you’d stayed all these years
And darkness hadn’t laid its weight on you
Chorus
